StartHub Africa supports entrepreneurs and growing businesses in Uganda and works with a portfolio of enterprises.

For this role, StartHub wants a finance professional who will help portfolio businesses build strong financial foundations, stay tax compliant and strengthen internal controls, while training owners and teams through financial literacy and bookkeeping coaching.

The Accountant gives high-level financial support to a portfolio of diverse businesses and acts as a strategic partner rather than a number cruncher. The work covers needs assessments, charts of accounts, accounting system set-up, dashboards, financial manuals and SOPs, monthly to annual financial statements, consolidated portfolio reports, tax returns and audit support.

A large part of the role is mentorship. The Accountant trains business owners and teams on bookkeeping, cash flow and financial statements, supervises junior accountants and advises businesses through scaling. The ideal candidate has managed complex financial operations across several businesses, projects and loan portfolios. Occasional travel to enterprises or offsite locations may be needed. Experience with startups, SMEs or business support programmes is highly valued. The role suits someone who enjoys solving startup financial problems.

• Run accounting and finance needs assessments for portfolio businesses and write assessment reports with recommendations.
• Design charts of accounts and deploy accounting systems, including opening balances, data migration and reporting templates.
• Develop dashboards plus financial manuals, policies and SOPs for procurement, approvals, payables, receivables, payroll and cash.
• Oversee monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements and keep ledgers, journals and reconciliations up to date.
• Consolidate portfolio-level reports and prepare monthly analysis on revenue, margins, costs and cash flow.
• Ensure timely URA and NSSF returns, including VAT, PAYE, withholding tax and income tax.
• Strengthen internal controls, run internal audits and investigations, and support external audits.
• Build financial models, cash flow projections and budgets, and oversee loan disbursement and repayment tracking where applicable.
• Manage project and grant accounting and prepare reports for partners and funders.
• Train business owners on financial management and supervise and coach junior accountants.

Required Education

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics or a related field.
• Full ACCA or CPA qualification.

Work Experience

• At least 7 years in accounting, audit or financial advisory, including at least 2 years in a senior or supervisory finance role.
• Proven experience setting up accounting systems such as Zoho Books or QuickBooks for SMEs.
• Experience with donor-funded projects, multi-project environments or loan portfolios is an advantage.

Additional Requirements

• Strong working knowledge of Uganda tax laws and URA and NSSF compliance.
• Strong accounting expertise, including IFRS for SMEs.

Technical Skills

• Modelling: analytical and financial modelling skills with advanced Excel.
• Audit: internal audit and forensic investigation skills.
• Project finance: grant management and loan portfolio tracking.

Soft Skills
