The Yenching Academy Scholarship (the Yenching Fellowship) fully funds the Master’s Programme in China Studies at the Yenching Academy of Peking University in Beijing, one of China’s top universities. The 2027 cohort starts in September 2027, and international applications close on 30 November 2026.
The Academy takes about 120 new students a year, and roughly 75% are international. It’s an interdisciplinary two-year master’s in the humanities and social sciences, open to graduates in any field with a strong interest in China and its role in the world.
For Ugandan graduates, the Yenching Academy Scholarship is a fully funded way to study in China and build networks across Asia and Africa, with tuition, housing, travel and a monthly stipend covered in the first year.
Eligibility Requirements
- Must hold at least a Bachelor’s degree in any field, or be due to graduate by August 2027
- Must have an outstanding academic record
- Must have a strong interest in interdisciplinary study of China
- Must show extracurricular achievement, community engagement, social responsibility and leadership potential
- Must be proficient in English
- Must be a non-Chinese citizen with a valid passport
- Must not be enrolled in another degree programme while studying at Peking University
English test: applicants whose native language is English, or who graduated from an English-taught degree, don’t need an English test. Most Ugandan university degrees are taught in English, but keep proof from your university. If you do take a test, the minimums are IELTS Academic 7.0 or TOEFL iBT 100, taken after 1 September 2025.
Scholarship Benefits
Tuition fees are covered for the master’s programme.
Accommodation in the Yenching Academy House in the first year.
A monthly living stipend paid during the fellowship.
A travel stipend for one round trip between your home country’s base city and Beijing.
Basic medical insurance, which China requires for all international students.
Expenses for designated research trips.
Scholars in good standing who stay in Beijing can apply for the second-year fellowship covering tuition, housing support, insurance and a stipend.

- Diploma(s) or certificate(s) of enrolment
- Two academic recommendation letters from full or associate professors in your intended field
- English test report sent directly by IELTS, TOEFL or Cambridge (if required)
How to Apply
- Create an account on the Yenching Academy online application portal.
- Prepare your personal statement and Statement of Research Interest in English.
- Ask two professors (full or associate) in your intended field to submit recommendation letters.
- If you need an English test, choose ‘Yenching Academy of Peking University’ as the score recipient when booking (TOEFL code C488).
- Submit everything before 9:00am Beijing time on 30 November 2026, which is 4:00am Kampala time on 30 November. Treat 29 November as your real deadline.
