About the ORTARCHI programme
The O.R. Tambo Africa Research Chair Initiative supports the project Strengthening Neuro-Infectious Disease Research Capacity at Makerere University through Tiered Mentorship and Institutional Collaboration. Partners include Makerere University, Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST), the University of Minnesota and CAPRISA in South Africa.
Training covers immunology, epidemiology, biostatistics, pharmacology and quality improvement, with research mentorship through neuro-infectious disease platforms.
Available scholarships and fellowships
- Five MMed scholarships (MSOR005): one MMed Paediatrics place and two MMed Internal Medicine places at Makerere College of Health Sciences, plus two MMed Internal Medicine places at MUST.
- One PhD fellowship (PhDOR001): Department of Internal Medicine, Makerere College of Health Sciences.
- One post-MMed research fellowship (RFOR001): Makerere College of Health Sciences.
The MMed listing states a one-year duration. The fellowship summaries describe a commitment of one to two years, while their portal metadata lists one year. Confirm the final fellowship duration with IDI before accepting an offer.
Who can apply?
MMed applicants must currently be in the second year of MMed Internal Medicine or Paediatrics at Makerere, or MMed Internal Medicine at MUST, and commit to full-time completion. The PhD and post-MMed adverts require a completed MMed programme and commitment to fellowship training.
IDI seeks motivated applicants interested in infectious and neurological diseases research, with a clear research question, research or publication experience, teamwork, communication skills and strong written and spoken English. These opportunities are not undergraduate medicine scholarships.
Funding and research support
IDI describes the training scholarships as fully funded. The MMed advert lists funded research career-development workshops, training and mentorship; research equipment, materials, supplies and data collection; manuscript and scientific-meeting support; opportunities for international conferences and courses; and exposure to grant writing and research management. No fixed cash stipend or monetary award amount is stated.
MMed scholars are expected to produce at least one peer-reviewed publication, submit their thesis for final examination, provide quarterly supervisor reports, present research updates and participate in IDI research forums.
Application documents
The MMed advert requires a CV, personal statement, two academic or professional references, academic transcripts, and telephone and email contact details. Prepare a one-page research abstract covering specific aims, background, methods, study justification, alignment with Uganda Vision 2040 and a proposed budget. Read the separate fellowship advert for its exact supporting-document requirements.
The portal also asks applicants to attach their application letter, CV and certificates as one document. Follow the instructions and upload fields in the application for your chosen award. Incomplete or late applications will not be considered. IDI states that it charges no recruitment fees, and only shortlisted candidates will be contacted.

Before You Apply
- Government health posts are paid on the medical salary schedule, not the general one. If the advert gives a scale code such as U5, check what it pays in our nurse salary guide for 2026/27.
- Applications go through idi.mak.ac.ug. Create your account early and keep your CV in a simple layout; our guide to applicant tracking systems explains why.
- If a gross salary is stated, check your take-home pay after PAYE and NSSF with the free salary calculator. When you are shortlisted, prepare with interview questions and answers for Uganda.

Never pay for a scholarship. Genuine scholarship programmes do not charge application, processing or placement fees. Anyone asking you to pay to apply, or to send money to secure a place, is running a scam.
