Erasmus Mundus 2027 for Ugandans: Deadlines and How to Apply

Most Erasmus Mundus scholarship deadlines for September 2027 fall between 1 December 2026 and 15 January 2027. Here are verified dates for Ugandan applicants and how to apply.

Short answer

Most Erasmus Mundus scholarship deadlines for September 2027 fall between 1 December 2026 and 15 January 2027. Here are verified dates for Ugandan applicants and how to apply.

Every year, Ugandan graduates hear that Erasmus Mundus is “the fully funded master’s in Europe” and then get lost. There is no single form, no single deadline and no single website where you apply. By the time many people figure out how it works, the scholarship rounds have closed.

This Erasmus Mundus Uganda guide is for the September 2027 intake. It explains what an Erasmus Mundus Joint Master is, what the EU scholarship pays, and why each programme runs its own application on its own date.

Timing is the whole game. Scholarship deadlines for 2027 start on Tuesday 1 December 2026 and most close by mid-January 2027. Miss the scholarship round and you can still be admitted, but you pay your own tuition and living costs.

Below you will find a table of deadlines we checked on each programme’s official website on 6 November 2026, with fields that suit Ugandan graduates in health, agriculture, water, public policy and social sciences. You will also get a step-by-step application plan, the documents to prepare in Uganda, and the mistakes that knock out good candidates.

Can Ugandans Apply for Erasmus Mundus?

Yes. Ugandans with a bachelor’s degree, or in their final year, can apply to any Erasmus Mundus Joint Master. You apply directly on each programme’s website. For September 2027, most scholarship deadlines fall between 1 December 2026 and 15 January 2027. Scholarship holders get €1,400 a month and pay no tuition.

The rules come from the European Commission’s Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters page for students. Uganda is outside the EU, so you apply as a non-European (often called “partner country”) applicant. Some programmes give you an earlier deadline than European applicants.

What Is an Erasmus Mundus Joint Master?

An Erasmus Mundus Joint Master (EMJM) is a one- to two-year master’s degree (60, 90 or 120 ECTS credits) run by a group of universities in different countries. You study in at least two of them and graduate with a joint or multiple degree.

For example, on GroundwatCh you study across institutions in Lisbon, Delft and Dresden. On EMMIR you move between universities in Germany, Norway, Slovenia, the Czech Republic and partners outside Europe.

The EU funds each programme for a set number of intakes. That funding pays scholarships to the best-ranked applicants worldwide. Programmes also admit self-funded students, who pay tuition and their own costs.

What the Erasmus Mundus Scholarship Pays

Scholarship holders receive €1,400 a month for the length of the programme and do not pay tuition or other mandatory participation costs. Mundus MAPP, for example, states on its financial aid page a maximum of €33,600 over 24 months, with a full tuition waiver.

Programme lengthMonths paidTotal allowance at €1,400/month
1 year (60 ECTS)12€16,800
1.5 years (90 ECTS)18€25,200
2 years (120 ECTS)24€33,600

Is Erasmus Mundus fully funded?

Only if you win a scholarship, and even then not for everything. The €1,400 must cover your flights from Entebbe, visa fees, rent, food and moving between countries. EMMIR says plainly that there are no extra payments for travel and installation. Mundus MAPP tells scholars to budget for their own study visit and winter school.

Some programmes also pay tuition in a capped way. Mastergeotech, for instance, lists tuition coverage of €1,800 per semester alongside the €1,400 monthly amount. Self-funded places come with no allowance at all. Read each programme’s funding page before you plan your budget.

Budget tip: Hold back about two months of allowance for the first weeks. Your first payment may arrive after you land, and deposits on student rooms in cities like Paris or Amsterdam are often one to two months’ rent.

Notice the late-night trap. A 23:59 CET deadline is almost 2:00 am the next day in Kampala. That sounds like extra time, but portals slow down near the deadline. EMMIR asks applicants to submit at least 48 hours early.

Results usually come between late February and April 2027. Europubhealth+ releases results in mid-March, Euroculture by the end of March, and Mundus MAPP on 14 April 2027.

How to Find and Verify a Programme

The only official list is the Erasmus Mundus Catalogue on the EACEA website. On 6 November 2026 it listed 219 projects. It is updated once a year.

The catalogue does not show deadlines or whether a scholarship is still on offer. EACEA itself warns that some listed programmes no longer have scholarships because their EU funding period is ending. So treat the catalogue as a starting list, then verify each programme yourself.

Five checks before you write a single motivation letter

  1. Filter by your degree. A BSc in Agriculture from Makerere or Gulu fits PlantHealth far better than a law master’s. Fit matters more than a famous university name.
  2. Open the programme’s own website. Look for “2027 intake” or “2027-2029 cohort” on the application page.
  3. Confirm scholarships are offered for 2027. If the page says no scholarships, drop it unless you can self-fund.
  4. Write down the non-European scholarship deadline and its time zone. Self-funded deadlines are later and will mislead you.
  5. Check entry requirements. Minimum grades, English test rules and work experience are set by each programme, not by the EU.

Fields that suit many Ugandan graduates

  • Health: Europubhealth+ for public health. Experience in hospitals, NGOs or community health counts in its selection criteria.
  • Agriculture and environment: PlantHealth, and water programmes such as GroundwatCh.
  • Engineering and earth sciences: Mastergeotech for civil engineering and geology graduates.
  • Social sciences and policy: Mundus MAPP, EMMIR and Euroculture.

How to Apply for Erasmus Mundus from Uganda

On most programmes, one application covers both admission and the scholarship. Mundus MAPP, for example, asks you to tick that you want financial aid in the funding section of the same form. Here is the plan to follow from now.

  1. This week: shortlist three to five programmes and confirm 2027 scholarships on each site.
  2. By mid-November: book an English test if your programme requires one. Europubhealth+ warns that test centres fill up close to the deadline.
  3. By late November: request certified transcripts and degree certificates from your university’s academic registrar. In Uganda this can take weeks.
  4. Ask referees early: give lecturers and supervisors at least three weeks, plus your CV and the programme name.
  5. Write one motivation letter per programme. Name the courses, the partner universities and how the degree connects to a real problem in Uganda.
  6. Submit at least 48 hours before the deadline. Save the confirmation email and a PDF of your submitted form.
  7. Prepare for interviews. Europubhealth+ interviews its shortlisted candidates online on 18 February 2027. Euroculture also interviews shortlisted applicants.

Documents to Prepare in Uganda

Requirements differ by programme, but this checklist covers what most consortia ask for:

DocumentWhere to get it in UgandaWatch out for
Bachelor’s degree certificateYour university’s academic registrarSome programmes need it completed by the deadline (see below)
Academic transcriptAcademic registrarAsk for an official copy with the grading scale explained
PassportMinistry of Internal Affairs, Directorate of Citizenship and Immigration ControlValid for the full programme; renew early
English proficiency proofIELTS or TOEFL test centre, or an English-medium letter from your universityNot every programme accepts a medium-of-instruction letter
Proof of residenceVaries by programme, for example an LC letter or official documentEuropubhealth+ wants it issued within 12 months of the deadline
Two or three reference lettersLecturers, supervisors, employersSigned, on letterhead, recent
CV and motivation letterYouTailored to each programme

Proof of residence matters because of a key rule: your study countries must be different from your country of residence. For a Ugandan living in Uganda, that is easy, but programmes still ask you to prove where you live.

Mistakes That Cost Ugandan Applicants the Scholarship

  • Applying in the self-funded round by mistake. EMMIR, Europubhealth+ and Euroculture all have later deadlines for self-funded students. Only the early round gives scholarships.
  • Applying before your degree is complete. EMMIR and Euroculture require the bachelor’s to be finished by the scholarship deadline. If your results are only released after January, check this before you apply.
  • Trusting old deadline lists. Pages from 2025 still rank on Google. Only the programme’s own 2027 page counts.
  • Assuming every catalogue programme has funding. Some are at the end of their EU funding period.
  • Applying if you already held an EMJM scholarship. Former Erasmus Mundus Joint Master scholarship holders are not eligible again.
  • Paying an agent. You apply yourself on the programme’s site. Programmes cannot charge scholarship holders tuition, and many charge no application fee at all.

Strategy: Programmes limit how many scholarships go to one nationality, so the competition is partly against other Ugandans in the same programme. A well-matched niche programme can be a better bet than the most popular one.

Erasmus Mundus is not the only route. The Gates Cambridge Scholarship has rounds closing on 8 December 2026 and 6 January 2027, and the DAAD Busitema scholarship lets you study a funded master’s here in Uganda.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Erasmus Mundus open to Ugandan students?

Yes. Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters accept students from all over the world, including Uganda. You need a bachelor’s degree, or to be in your final year and graduate before the programme starts. Some programmes are stricter and require the degree to be complete by the scholarship deadline, so check each programme’s rules before applying.

When is the Erasmus Mundus deadline for 2027?

There is no single deadline. Each programme sets its own. For the September 2027 intake, scholarship deadlines we verified run from 1 December 2026 (Mundus MAPP) to 15 January 2027 (Euroculture), with others such as EMMIR on 20 December and Europubhealth+ on 8 January. Always confirm on the programme’s official page.

How much does the Erasmus Mundus scholarship pay?

Scholarship holders receive €1,400 a month for the full programme, which is up to €33,600 for a two-year master’s, and pay no tuition or mandatory fees. The allowance must cover travel, visa, rent and living costs. Some programmes add insurance. Self-funded students receive no allowance and pay tuition.

Are all Erasmus Mundus programmes fully funded?

No. Only a limited number of places on each programme come with an EU scholarship, and some programmes in the catalogue no longer offer scholarships at all. Many students are self-funded. Even scholarship holders must pay travel and some study trips from their allowance, so read the programme’s funding page carefully.

How many Erasmus Mundus programmes can I apply to?

You can apply to several programmes in the same year, because each has its own application. In practice, three to five well-matched applications is realistic, since each needs a tailored motivation letter, references and sometimes an interview. A strong letter for the right programme wins more often than ten generic ones.

Do I need IELTS for Erasmus Mundus?

It depends on the programme. Some accept a letter confirming your degree was taught in English, while others require IELTS, TOEFL or another test with a minimum score and date. Europubhealth+ treats language proof as mandatory for eligibility. Check the programme’s admission requirements early, because test dates in Kampala fill up.

Is there an application fee for Erasmus Mundus?

Many programmes charge no application fee, and Mundus MAPP says its applicants do not need to pay the CEU application fee. Scholarship holders are not charged tuition. Be careful of agents who ask for money to “process” your Erasmus application. You apply directly and for free on each programme’s own website.

When are Erasmus Mundus results released?

Most programmes announce scholarship results between late February and April 2027. PlantHealth publishes its lists at the end of February, Europubhealth+ in mid-March, Euroculture by the end of March, and Mundus MAPP on 14 April 2027. That leaves time to apply for a visa before September.

Start With Your Shortlist This Week

Erasmus Mundus is one of the best-funded routes to a European master’s for Ugandan graduates, but only if you apply in the scholarship round. That round opens and closes between December 2026 and January 2027.

Pick three to five programmes that match your degree, confirm their 2027 scholarship deadlines on the official sites, and start your transcripts, English test and references now. Submit two days early, not two hours.
