Warrior Squad Foundation (WSF) is an indigenous, non-profit National Non-Governmental Organisation registered in Uganda (Reg. INDR93422994NB), headquartered in Kotido Municipality in the Karamoja sub-region. Founded in 2005, WSF is dedicated to the social, economic, and political transformation of pastoral and marginalised communities through sustainable, community-driven development.

WSF operates across all districts of Karamoja, including Kotido, Moroto, Kaabong, Abim, Napak, Nakapiripirit, Nabilatuk, and Amudat. The organisation works through five core programme areas: Governance (Peacebuilding and Human Rights), Livelihoods and Food Security, Natural Resources (Environment and Climate Change), Inclusive Quality Lifelong Learning (Education), and Health and Nutrition.

The Project Volunteer will support the day-to-day implementation of the KAREP (Karamoja Agro-Pastoral Resilience and Empowerment) project, a three-year initiative funded by OXFAM Novib that aims to enhance climate resilience, food and nutrition security, and economic empowerment of women and youth in Karamoja through climate-smart agriculture, sustainable markets, and capacity building. The project is implemented in the sub-counties of Kachieri/Kapeta and Panyangara in Kotido District.

Working under the guidance of the Project Officer, you will be involved in community mobilisation, facilitating field activities with Agro-Pastoral Farmer Field School (APFFS) groups, data collection and documentation, and stakeholder engagement. This is an ideal placement for a recent graduate seeking practical, hands-on experience in livelihoods programming, climate-smart agriculture, VSLA methodology, and community development in one of Uganda’s most unique and challenging regions. This is a volunteer placement with a monthly allowance, not a salaried staff position.

Project Implementation Support

• Support the mobilisation of Agro-Pastoral Farmer Field School (APFFS) groups and beneficiaries for project activities, meetings, and trainings.
• Assist in the establishment and day-to-day follow-up of farmer-managed Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA) demonstration block farms.
• Support the dissemination of pre-season agro-weather advisories to farmer groups and community members.
• Assist in organising and facilitating trainings on post-harvest handling to reduce food loss.
• Support community assessment of degraded and fragile areas, and follow up on community tree nurseries.
• Support the formation and follow-up of Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs), including record keeping, use of VSLA kits, and the SWAP approach.
• Assist in mapping and assessing existing livestock infrastructure (dips) and follow up on rehabilitation works.
• Support the mobilisation of women leaders within the APFFS groups for leadership training and participation in Local Government budgeting and planning processes.
• Provide logistical support for field activities, including preparation of training materials, attendance registers, and venue arrangements.

Data Collection and Documentation

• Support the verification of target beneficiaries against the agreed selection criteria.
• Collect and record data on group attendance, participation rates, and activity progress using WSF tools.
• Assist in pre- and post-training assessments to measure changes in knowledge and practice among participants.
• Take photographs, capture success stories, and case studies (with informed consent) for project reporting and communication.
• Maintain accurate and well-organised field records and files for all project activities.

Networking and Stakeholder Engagement

• Support the Project Officer in organising coordination meetings with sub-county officials, extension workers, community leaders, and other stakeholders.
• Serve as a link between WSF and the farmer groups, relaying feedback, concerns, and suggestions from communities to the project team.
• Work closely with the Monitoring and Evaluation and Communications teams to support data flow and documentation.

Reporting

• Report directly to the Project Officer – KAREP for day-to-day guidance and supervision.
• Prepare and submit brief field activity reports after each activity, and a monthly volunteer activity report.
• Participate in weekly project team meetings and share updates on field activities.

Required Education

• Certificate or Diploma in Agriculture, Agribusiness, Social Sciences, Development Studies, Environmental Science, or a related field.
• Recent graduates are encouraged to apply.

Work Experience

• Previous volunteering or internship experience with an NGO or community-based project is an added advantage.
• Basic knowledge of agriculture, livelihoods, VSLA, or community development work.

Language Requirements

• Fluency in English (oral and written).
• Fluency in Ngakarimojong is required.
• Residence in or familiarity with Kotido District is an added advantage.

Additional Requirements

• Basic computer skills (MS Word, Excel) and ability to use mobile data collection tools.
• Good oral and written communication and basic report writing skills.
• Women and persons from the target communities are strongly encouraged to apply.
• Must adhere to WSF Code of Conduct, Safeguarding, and PSEA policies at all times.
• Willingness to undergo a comprehensive background check related to safeguarding topics.

Technical Skills

• Agricultural Knowledge: Basic understanding of farming systems, climate-smart agriculture practices, and post-harvest handling relevant to Karamoja’s agro-pastoral context.
• Data Collection: Ability to use mobile data collection tools and maintain accurate field records, attendance registers, and beneficiary databases.
• Report Writing: Capacity to produce clear field activity reports and contribute to monthly volunteer reports.
• Computer Literacy: Working knowledge of MS Word and Excel for documentation and basic data entry.
• VSLA Methodology: Familiarity with Village Savings and Loan Association approaches, record keeping, and the SWAP methodology is an advantage.

Soft Skills

• Community Mobilisation: Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to relate well with farmers, women, youth, and community leaders in rural Karamoja.
• Self-Motivation: Willingness to learn, take initiative, and work independently under supervision in hard-to-reach areas.
• Cultural Sensitivity: Respect for community values, pastoral culture, and the ability to maintain confidentiality of beneficiary information.
• Teamwork: Reliable team player with integrity and good time management, able to collaborate across departments (M&E, Communications, Programs).
• Adaptability: Willingness to work long hours in the field and travel regularly to rural sub-counties under challenging conditions.

This is a volunteer placement with a monthly volunteer allowance (facilitation) provided in line with the WSF Volunteer Policy. While this is not a salaried staff position, the placement offers significant professional development value:

• A monthly volunteer allowance to cover facilitation costs.
