The Packaging Process Operator will safely operate and maintain defined packaging plants and related processes at the Jinja Brewery in order to achieve optimal effectiveness. Working within AB InBev’s Voyager Plant Optimisation (VPO) framework, the operator is responsible for running packaging line equipment, performing quality checks and analyses, applying 5S housekeeping principles, and identifying and correcting unsafe work practices. This is a hands-on production floor role at one of East Africa’s largest and most modern brewing facilities.

Beyond daily operations, the role involves supporting the creation of standard work procedures, participating in problem-solving activities using structured methodologies (5 WHY, Quick Fix routines), contributing to performance improvement reviews, and maintaining effective communication with shift teams through logbooks and handovers. The position requires someone who combines technical engineering knowledge with a disciplined approach to quality, safety, and continuous improvement in a high-volume FMCG production environment.

• Operate equipment and plant in packaging process areas according to VPO (Voyager Plant Optimisation) standards.
• Optimise plant and process performance where appropriate.
• Operate the packaging plant equipment and process safely and efficiently.
• Perform housekeeping tasks, applying 5S principles and following safe work practices.
• Identify and correct unsafe work practices on the packaging line.
• Support the creation, drafting, and documenting of standard work procedures, including quick fix routines and problem solving.
• Carry out required quality checks and analyses, recording results on the appropriate information system.
• Apply appropriate problem-solving techniques (5 WHY, Quick Fix routines) where quality problems have arisen.
• Escalate any identified or unresolved problems to the Line Manager.
• Actively participate in meetings and Performance Improvement (PI) reviews.
• Fully understand team goals and participate in team goal review sessions.
• Make use of relevant communication media (shift logbook) to stay informed and inform others of issues.
• Complete required handovers to incoming shift team members, ensuring issues relating to plant performance and quality are communicated.
• Complete autonomous operations tasks and problem-solving activities.

Required Education

• Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.

Work Experience

• Experience within the FMCG industry is an added advantage.

Additional Requirements

• Understanding of VPO (Voyager Plant Optimisation) principles.
• Knowledge of 5S housekeeping methodology and safe work practices.
• Familiarity with structured problem-solving techniques such as 5 WHY analysis and Quick Fix routines.

Technical Skills

• Packaging Equipment Operation: Ability to safely operate and maintain industrial packaging line equipment in a high-volume brewery production environment.
• VPO Standards: Understanding of Voyager Plant Optimisation principles and the ability to apply them to daily operations for continuous improvement.
• Quality Control: Proficiency in carrying out quality checks and analyses, recording results accurately, and taking corrective action when quality standards are not met.
• Problem Solving: Experience applying structured problem-solving methodologies including 5 WHY analysis and Quick Fix routines to address production and quality issues.
• 5S & Housekeeping: Knowledge of 5S workplace organisation methodology (Sort, Set in Order, Shine, Standardise, Sustain) for maintaining a safe and efficient production floor.
