About Pearl Bank Uganda

Pearl Bank Uganda (formerly PostBank Uganda) is a Tier 1 commercial bank wholly owned by the Government of Uganda through the Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development. The bank’s heritage spans over 28 years, tracing back to the Post Office Savings Department established in 1926, incorporated as PostBank Uganda in 1998, and elevated to Tier 1 commercial bank status in 2021.

About The Role

The Applications Support Officer is responsible for ensuring that Pearl Bank Uganda’s business applications are running, performing, and available at all times. Reporting to the Manager Business Applications, you will monitor application uptime through dashboards and alerting tools, analyse and resolve issues escalated from the Level 2 support team, coordinate with application vendors on bugs and enhancements, and own all application-related incidents in the IT service desk system from assignment through to closure.

Beyond incident response, you will plan and execute installations, upgrades, and patches, gather system enhancement and reporting requirements from business users, perform proactive capacity and availability monitoring, and troubleshoot network-related application issues. This role demands a strong technical foundation: advanced Docker and containerization knowledge, Unix/Linux and Windows administration, SQL and database management (Oracle, SQL Server, PostgreSQL, MySQL), and programming skills in Python, C#, PHP, JavaScript, or Java. If you thrive on keeping mission-critical systems alive and performing in a fast-moving banking environment, this is the role.

Requirements & Skills

Key Responsibilities

  • Monitor IT applications’ uptime and performance through monitoring tools, alerts, dashboards, and other mechanisms.
  • Analyse and resolve application-related issues escalated from the bank’s Level 2 support team during operations and maintain proper documentation and logs for the resolution provided.
  • Coordinate with application vendor support in case of product bugs or enhancement requirements and follow up with the vendor for early resolution and solution.
  • Own all application-related calls, problems, and incidents assigned in the IT service desk system; carry out problem investigation and analysis, follow up with the respective teams, and update the status with issue resolution for closure.
  • Schedule, plan, and execute the installation and testing of new products, upgrades, patches, or improvements to the applications.
  • Gather system enhancement, data extract requests, and reporting requirements from system users and work closely with the Information Technology team to develop detailed technical requirements and resulting specifications.
  • Maintain banking systems performance by performing proactive system capacity and availability monitoring and analysis, performance tuning, troubleshooting network problems, and escalating problems to the vendor.

Qualifications & Requirements

Required Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in IT, Computer Science, Business, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications Engineering, or a related field.
  • Practical training in IT-related short courses.

Preferred Certification

  • Certification in an IT-related course is an added advantage.

Work Experience

Technical Requirements

  • Advanced knowledge in dockerization and containerization.
  • Advanced knowledge in Unix/Linux operating systems.
  • In-depth experience in SQL and database management systems (Oracle, SQL Server, PostgreSQL, MySQL).
  • In-depth experience in Windows operating systems.
  • Programming experience (Python, C#, PHP, JavaScript, Java, etc.).
  • Scripting knowledge.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and solve user problems.

Skills & Competencies

Benefits & Application

Benefits

Pearl Bank Uganda offers a competitive compensation package for this technical role. As a government-owned Tier 1 commercial bank with UGX 47.3 billion in profit after tax (2025) and UGX 1.42 trillion in customer deposits, Pearl Bank provides both job security and exposure to a rapidly scaling technology environment. Staff benefits include health insurance, wellness support, continuous training, and internal career advancement. You will work with modern tooling (Docker, containerized applications, multiple database platforms, and monitoring dashboards) in a bank that is actively investing in its technology infrastructure.

Why Apply

  • Work with a genuinely diverse technology stack: Docker, Unix/Linux, Windows, Oracle, SQL Server, PostgreSQL, MySQL, plus programming in Python, C#, PHP, JavaScript, or Java. This is not a single-system role.
  • Only two years of IT experience required, making this an accessible entry point into banking technology at a major Ugandan financial institution.

  • Government-backed stability with a clear five-year strategy, UGX 62 billion AFD partnership, and Bank of Uganda oversight, meaning your role is both funded and strategically prioritised.
  • The bank supports professional certification pathways and continuous training, helping you build credentials while gaining practical experience.
